Who is the main god in Aztec mythology?

The Aztecs had a complex pantheon with many important deities, but the one most often considered the chief god is Huitzilopochtli (pronounced "Weetz-ee-loh-posht-lee"). Here's why he holds this position:

War and Sun God

Huitzilopochtli embodied both the sun, the giver of life, and war, the force that sustained the sun god. The Aztecs believed their empire existed to provide warriors for sacrifice to keep the sun moving across the sky.

Founding Deity

He played a crucial role in Aztec creation myths. Some versions depict him battling his siblings to bring forth the sun and humanity. The Aztecs believed they founded their capital, Tenochtitlan, based on a vision sent by Huitzilopochtli.

Prominent Worship

The Templo Mayor, the heart of Tenochtitlan, featured a dual temple dedicated to Huitzilopochtli and Tlaloc, the rain god. This prominent placement reflects Huitzilopochtli's importance. 

It's important to note that the Aztec worldview wasn't strictly hierarchical. Other deities like Quetzalcoatl (god of knowledge and wind) and Tlaloc (god of rain) were also vital. However, Huitzilopochtli's association with both the life-giving sun and the empire's martial success gave him a unique and powerful position.
